Davao de Oro

by tripadvisor.com

Davao de Oro, previously known as Compostela Valley, is a province in the Davao Region (Southern Mindanao) of the Philippines located on the southern island of Mindanao. Its provincial capital is the municipality of Nabunturan.

Compostela Valley was officially renamed Davao de Oro after a plebiscite held on December 7, 2019. This change aimed to associate the province more closely with the rest of the Davao Region, enhancing its identity and promoting regional inclusivity.

The province is renowned for its rich natural resources and is notably one of the country’s leading producers of gold, copper, and silver, which play a pivotal role in its local economy. The mining industry in Davao de Oro has been a significant contributor to economic development but also poses challenges related to environmental sustainability and responsible mining practices.

Davao de Oro possesses a diverse landscape, ranging from fertile valleys and high plateaus to mountain ranges. Its topography makes it an ideal location for agriculture, with large areas dedicated to banana plantations, rice fields, and coconut groves. The province is also dotted with natural attractions, such as waterfalls, hot springs, and caves, which are growing in popularity among adventure seekers and eco-tourists.

One of the crown jewels of the province is Mt. Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines, which is partially located within its boundaries. The mountain and its surrounding areas are a sanctuary to a host of endemic wildlife species and offer hiking opportunities with picturesque views.

Culturally, Davao de Oro is a melting pot of various indigenous groups, each with its unique traditions and beliefs. Festivals such as the Bulawan Festival, a celebration of the province’s founding anniversary, showcase its cultural heritage and local products.

The people of Davao de Oro, known for their warmth and hospitality, face the future with optimism. As the province continues to develop and find a balance between progress and environmental stewardship, it remains a region with much to offer both residents and visitors alike.
