Northern Samar, one of the three provinces comprising the island of Samar in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, is an area known for its rugged terrain and natural beauty. Its provincial capital is the municipality of Catarman which serves as the hub for its commerce and governance.

The province is edged by the San Bernardino Strait to the west, separating it from Luzon, and the Pacific Ocean to the east.

The rustic charm of Northern Samar is exemplified by its picturesque landscapes, which include unspoiled beaches, verdant rainforests, and majestic waterfalls. Biri Island, famous for its natural rock formations sculpted by the elements, is a must-visit destination for eco-tourists and adventure seekers. Meanwhile, the Capul Island Lighthouse is a historical beacon that guides mariners and is a testament to the province’s rich colonial past.

Northern Samar has a deeply rooted cultural heritage, with influences from the Spanish colonization era still visible in old churches and local traditions. One key event showcasing its cultural vibrancy is the Sumaray Surfing Festival in San Isidro, which celebrates the province’s potential as a surfing destination with swells coming from the Pacific.

The local economy of Northern Samar largely depends on agriculture, with rice, coconut, and abaca as the main products. Despite its natural gifts and potential for tourism development, the province faces challenges such as poverty and underdevelopment, partly due to its geographical vulnerability to typhoons and its distant location from major economic centers.
