Maguindanao del Norte is one of the newest provinces in the Philippines, located in the BARRM Region in Mindanao, its provincial capital is the municipality of Datu Odin Sinsuat.

The province was created following a plebiscite held on September 17, 2022, that split the former Maguindanao into two provinces, the other being Maguindanao del Sur. This division was enacted to help streamline administration and foster more localized development.

Geography and Demographics

Maguindanao del Norte is characterized by its varied landscape that includes central lowlands, coastal areas, and mountainous terrain to the north. This geographical diversity supports a range of agricultural activities, which are the backbone of its local economy. The area is also rich in cultural heritage, with a majority of its population comprised of Maguindanaon people, alongside other ethnic groups such as the Teduray and the Ilonggo.

The economy of Maguindanao del Norte primarily revolves around agriculture, with rice and corn being the staple crops. Additionally, the province has started to explore other avenues for development such as aquaculture and trade, given its access to coastal areas. Efforts to improve infrastructure, including roads, schools, and medical facilities, are ongoing to help bolster economic growth.

Culture and Festivals

Cultural richness is eminent in Maguindanao del Norte, with traditional music, dance, and art playing integral roles in the everyday lives of its residents. One of the major festivals celebrated in the province is the Inaul Festival, which showcases the Inaul fabric, a traditional weaving art of the Maguindanaon people known for its intricate designs and vibrant colors.

Being a newly formed province, Maguindanao del Norte faces a variety of challenges including political, economic, and environmental issues.
