Province of Camiguin:
Philippine Standard Geographical Code # 101800000
Camiguin, known as the “Island Born of Fire,” is a captivating province in the northern part of Mindanao in the Philippines. It’s the second smallest province in the country both in population and land area, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in its stunning natural beauty and rich history. Its provincial capital is the municipality of Mambajao.
Camiguin is an island province shaped by its volcanic origins, with seven volcanoes including the still-active Mount Hibok-Hibok. This volcanic activity has given the province its unique topography and fertile land, making it a haven for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.
One of the island’s gems is the Sunken Cemetery, which was submerged in the sea after a volcanic eruption in the 1870s. Marked by a large cross, it stands as a haunting reminder of the island’s volatile past and is now a popular site for snorkeling and diving, offering a glimpse into an underwater grave site that has been reclaimed by marine life.
The province is also famous for its natural hot springs, like Ardent Hot Springs, where the warm waters offer a therapeutic experience. Cold springs, such as Sto. Niño Cold Springs, provide a refreshing counterpoint to the heat of the island.
For beach lovers, White Island is an unmissable spot. This uninhabited white sandbar with crystalline waters changes shape depending on the tide and offers a stunning view of the volcanoes. Mantigue Island is another destination where one can enjoy snorkeling in the marine sanctuary or simply relaxing on its beautiful beaches.
Camiguin’s Lanzones Festival is an annual celebration where streets come alive with dances and parades in honor of the lanzones fruit, a tropical fruit that the island is particularly known for producing.
Visiting Camiguin is a journey through a landscape that is constantly evolving yet remains serenely beautiful. Its wealth of natural attractions, warm welcoming locals, and laid-back rural charm make it a memorable destination for those looking to experience the quieter side of the Philippines.
