General Santos City, the Tuna Capital of the Philippines

General Santos City is a Highly Urban City (HUC) and is known to the locals as GenSan is the regional center as well as the hub for industry and commerce for the SOCCSKSARGEN Region. Once known as the municipality of Buayan in 1947 it absorbed the district of Glan, and in June of 1954 it was renamed General Santos as a tribute to General Paulino Santos.

GenSan is located on the southern tip of the Philippines in the province of South Cotabato on the island of Mindanao, dubbed the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines,” it boasts a thriving fishing industry that significantly contributes to both local and international markets.

With a 2020 census population of 697,315 people making, it the most populated city in the SOCCSKSARGEN Region. It also has a land area of 492.86 square kilometers or 190.29 square miles making it a large city in area and size.
