Discovering MIMAROPA: The Treasure of Southwestern Philippines
The MIMAROPA Region, also known as Southwestern Tagalog Region is officially designated as Region IV-B, is one of the 17 regions of the Philippines. The name MIMAROPA is an acronym representing its five provinces: Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan. The region of MIMAROPA is comprised of five provinces: Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and Palawan, known for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, MIMAROPA is often dubbed the “Treasure Chest of the Philippines.”
When Region IV was split into 2 regions IV-A and IV-B. When Region IV-B was created its PSGC # Base was changed to XVII; this is because it was the 17th region created but the Philippine Government.
Geographic and Political Composition
MIMAROPA is located in the southwestern part of Luzon, although geographically, it lies between Luzon and the Visayas. It is made up of island provinces, and each contributes to the region’s unique identity:
- Mindoro (Occidental and Oriental) – The seventh-largest island in the Philippines, known for its agricultural products, beautiful beaches, and Mount Halcon.
- Marinduque – Famous for the Moriones Festival and its heritage as the heart of Philippine folklore and culture.
- Romblon – Often referred to as the “Marble Capital of the Philippines,” due to its abundant and high-quality marble deposits.
- Palawan – Frequently voted as one of the most beautiful islands in the world, home to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, El Nido, Coron, and rich biodiversity.
The regional center of MIMAROPA is Calapan City, located in Oriental Mindoro.
The MIMAROPA Region is an archipelago island region consisting of 5 provinces and is made up of island provinces in the Philippine Sea and the Sulu Sea., with the Island of Luzon to the north-east, and the Visayas Region to the south-east.
Economy and Natural Resources
The region’s economy is largely based on agriculture, fishing, mining, and tourism. MIMAROPA is a key contributor to the country’s supply of rice, coconut, and marine products. Palawan, in particular, is rich in mineral resources, including nickel and copper.
Tourism plays a crucial role in the local economy, thanks to world-class natural attractions like white sand beaches, limestone cliffs, coral reefs, and pristine forests.
Culture and Heritage
MIMAROPA is a melting pot of Indigenous and Filipino cultures. Indigenous groups such as the Mangyan in Mindoro and the Tagbanua in Palawan continue to preserve their customs, crafts, and languages.
Traditional festivals like Moriones (Marinduque), Biniray Festival (Romblon), and various harvest and tribal celebrations highlight the region’s rich cultural tapestry.
