Biliran (an island province)

The regional center is Tacloban City, located in Leyte.

Language and Culture

The primary languages spoken in Eastern Visayas are:

Waray-Waray – widely spoken in Leyte, Samar, and Biliran.
Cebuano – used in parts of Southern Leyte.
Tagalog and English – used in education, business, and government.

The culture in the region is deeply influenced by Spanish colonization, Christianity (primarily Roman Catholicism), and local traditions. Festivals such as the Sangyaw Festival in Tacloban and Sinulog ha Malitbog in Southern Leyte showcase the region’s vibrant cultural heritage.

Historical Significance

Eastern Visayas has played a key role in Philippine history:

World War II: General Douglas MacArthur landed in Leyte in 1944, marking the beginning of the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation.
First Catholic Mass: Historians and the Catholic Church recognize Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte as the site of the first Catholic mass in the Philippines in 1521.

Challenges and Development
