Western Visayas (Region VI) – A Cultural and Natural Gem of the Philippines

Western Visayas, officially designated as Region VI, is one of the 17 administrative regions of the Philippines. Located in the central part of the Philippine archipelago consisting of six provinces: Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo on the island of Panay. Guimaras its own island, and Negros Oriental on the west side of the island of Negros. Geography and Provinces

Western Visayas is composed of six provinces and two highly urbanized cities:

Capiz
Guimaras
Iloilo
Negros Occidental
Bacolod City (capital of Negros Occidental and the Regional Center).
Iloilo City (capital of Iloilo province)

The region covers both island and coastal terrains, including portions of Panay Island and the western half of Negros Island, as well as Guimaras Island, located between Panay and Negros.

People and Language

The people of Western Visayas are called Visayans. Major languages spoken in the region include:

Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) – Predominantly in Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras
Kinaray-a – Common in Antique and parts of Iloilo
Aklanon – Native to Aklan
Capiznon – Spoken in Capiz

English and Filipino are also widely used, particularly in education, media, and government.

Economy

Western Visayas has a mixed economy that includes agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, and tourism. Major agricultural products include rice, sugarcane, mangoes, and fish. Guimaras is especially renowned for its sweet mangoes. The region is also home to growing Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sectors, particularly in Iloilo City and Bacolod City.

The Western Visayas Region is an archipelago island region and consists of 6 provinces and makes up the western portion of the Visayas Island Group. It’s border by Region VII: Central Visayas to the south-east, Region IV-A: CALABARZON, Region V: Bicol Region to the north-east, and the Sulu Sea to the west.
