Nestled in the Davao Gulf, just a short 2-kilometer ferry ride from Davao City, the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) is a component city in Davao del Norte and is a tropical haven that seamlessly blends natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. This island city, which is made up of Samal Island, and the smaller Talikud Island has 46 barangays, a 2020 population of 116,771 people, and a combined land area of 301.30 sq. kilometers (116.33 sq. miles).

As part of Metro Davao, it is known as the largest resort city in the Philippines, Samal Island offers an idyllic escape for travelers seeking sun, sea, and serenity, and even though Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal are only 2-kilometers apart they are in different provinces.

A Glimpse into Samal’s Past

Historically, Samal Island was inhabited by the Sama-Bajau people and later settled by the animistic Mansakas and Mandayas from the northern and eastern parts of the Davao Region. These communities were organized under local leaders known as “Datus” until the early 20th century. The island experienced Spanish colonization in the late 1840s, followed by American occupation. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the island, leading to significant hardships for the local population. Post-war, the island saw infrastructural developments and, in 1998, the municipalities of Samal, Babak, and Kaputian were merged to form the Island Garden City of Samal.
