A Glimpse into Historyby

Baybay’s historical roots trace back to the early Spanish exploration. It was one of the first settlements on Leyte’s western coast known to Spanish conquistadors accompanying Magellan. In 1620, Jesuit missionaries established a church and mission house in the area, marking the formal foundation of the town.

The city’s name, “Baybay,” is believed to have originated from a miscommunication between Spanish explorers and local inhabitants. When asked about the place’s name, a local, misunderstanding the question, referred to the river’s path, saying, “Ang suba nagbaybay sa Pangasugan,” leading the Spaniards to name the area “Baybay”.
